Rings are beautiful, but they are not one size fits all. Novice fine jewellery shoppers are often surprised by the need to figure out their own or a loved one's precise ring size before buying. Shopping online is no different. In fact, it often makes the problem even more noticeable.

Different brands use various measurement systems, and sizes can vary slightly from jeweller to jeweller or brand to brand. Because of this, double-checking your ring size is essential. With the rise in cross-border online shopping, getting expensive fine jewellery purchases right from the start is more important than ever. This resource should help you with that.

Tips for Accurate Measuring

If measuring a ring's inside diameter, hold the ruler or tape straight across the centre of the ring, rather than at an angle. Ring-sizing apps are also widely available now and can make this process quicker and more precise.

If you're measuring your finger instead, keep these tips in mind:

  • Measure when warm: Take your measurement when your hands are warm, ideally later in the day. Cold fingers can temporarily shrink by up to half a size.

  • Avoid swelling triggers: Skip measuring right after salty meals, alcohol, or exercise, as these can cause temporary swelling.

  • Account for your knuckles: If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size in between, so the ring fits comfortably but can still pass over the knuckle.

  • Factor in band width: Wider bands tend to fit more snugly than thin ones, so size up by half a size for a wide-band ring.

  • Measure more than once: Check your size two or three times to confirm accuracy. If you fall between sizes, it's best to round up for a more comfortable fit.

Can My Ring Be Resized?

Ring resizing is usually straightforward, but repeated resizing isn't recommended, as it can weaken or damage the precious metal over time. If a ring is only slightly loose, adding small sizing beads inside the band offers a gentler alternative—ideal for delicate adjustments or for particularly precious pieces, such as heirloom rings. This method also works well for full eternity rings. However, because eternity rings are bespoke, made-to-measure pieces, it's especially important to get the sizing right from the start, as they generally can't be resized once made.

It's also important to keep in mind that there are limits to how much a ring can be resized. As a general rule, adjusting within two full sizes up or down is safe, while anything beyond that is not recommended, as it can compromise the ring's shape and structural integrity.

Whether you're treating yourself or choosing a piece for someone special, taking a little extra care with sizing now means years of comfortable, worry-free wear. A well-fitted ring is one you barely notice you're wearing — until it catches the light and catches your eye all over again. Take the time to get the fit right, and enjoy every moment with your beautiful new piece.
